The air-filled chambers, known as the maxillary sinuses, are situated just above the maxilla or rear of the upper jaw. For some people, due to factors such as tooth loss, periodontal disease, or natural sinus expansion (sinus pneumatization), there may not be enough bone height in the upper jaw to securely place dental implants. A dental implant may only be securely anchored if sufficient bone is available.

A special approach called sinus lift surgery, often referred to as sinus augmentation or sinus graft, is frequently suggested for patients who want dental implants but do not have enough jawbone. This operation is essential to prepare the upper jaw, especially in the area of the molars and premolars, to ensure that dental implants perform well and endure a long time.

Sinus Lift Procedure

1

First Consultation

Before the procedure, a thorough clinical examination and radiographic assessment (including a CBCT radiograph) are performed to evaluate the anatomy of the sinus and the existing bone structure and exclude any pathologies.

2

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is administered to ensure patient comfort during the procedure. Sedation options may be available for patients who require them.

3

Surgery to Lift the Sinuses and Implant

A sinus lift treatment will proceed or will be performed simultaneously with the dental implant placement.

4

Implant restoration

The implant crown will be placed after proper healing time.

Recovery and Aftercare

After surgery, proper care is essential for a speedy recovery. Swelling and light bleeding are common side effects that go away in a few days. You will receive comprehensive instructions from your surgeon on how to take care of the surgery site and encourage recovery. These might consist of:

  • li-iconUsing medications as directed to avoid infection.
  • li-iconSteer clear of aggressive activity that might disturb the bone transplant, such as sneezing or blowing your nose.
  • li-iconAvoiding smoking, which has been shown to impede recovery.

Initial Healing: The initial healing of the gum tissue typically takes a few days.

Bone Integration: Full integration of the bone graft material with the natural bone can take 4 to 9 months. This period is necessary for sufficient bone formation to support the dental implants.

In Summary

Sinus lift surgery is an essential stage in the dental implant process for individuals with inadequate upper jawbone. By laying a solid foundation of bone, this process improves the chance of successful implant placement and long-term dental health.
