Understanding the Different
Proedures

  • 1.Gums Grafting

Gum grafting is a technique used to treat receding gum tissue or to restore the lack of attached healthy gingiva around teeth or implants addressing both functional and aesthetic concerns in oral health. Gum recession can result in exposed tooth roots, which increases the risk of tooth decay and injury, as well as sensitivity and aesthetic issues. In a gum grafting procedure, the periodontist will graft a piece of tissue to the receding portions of the patient’s gums. Two main sources of graft materials are used in gum grafting: The periodontist may harvest the tissue from the patient’s roof of mouth or can use a donated tissue. In addition to shielding the teeth, this improves the smile’s appearance by producing a balanced, realistic-looking gum line. Also, having thicker attached gingiva may help the patient to improve their oral hygiene and is necessary to prevent future gum recession.

  • 2.Gingivectomy:

Excess gum tissue can be removed surgically to restore regular gum shapes. This can happen due to gum disease, drug side effects, or hereditary predispositions. Overgrowth of gum tissue can harbor germs, which can cause periodontal disease and other problems with dental health. Gingivectomy, a surgical procedure that removes diseased or overgrown gum tissue with great care, is critical in restoring regular gum shapes, lowering pocket depths, and enhancing overall dental hygiene. By exposing more of the tooth’s surface, this treatment not only encourages healthier gums but also results in a more aesthetically beautiful smile.

  • 3. Aesthetic Crown Lengthening

A cosmetic surgery called aesthetic crown lengthening is used when teeth appear shorter due to an overabundance of gum tissue covering them. In order to expose more of the tooth’s natural crown, this surgery entails altering the gum tissue and, if necessary, the underlying bone. Esthetic crown lengthening improves the ratio of teeth to gums by carefully correcting the gum line, giving the appearance of a more balanced and appealing smile. Patients who want a more attractive and confident smile will benefit most from this operation.

  • 4. Functional Crown Extension

Functional crown lengthening, as opposed to aesthetic crown lengthening, is primarily done to treat functional issues rather than aesthetic concerns. This surgery is required when decay, injury leave insufficient tooth structure above the gum line. Functional crown lengthening reshapes the gum and bone tissue to reveal more of the tooth’s surface, facilitating the placement of an appropriate restoration, like a crown or filling. This process ensures that restorations are firmly fixed and helps stop additional deterioration or damage by facilitating easier access for upkeep and cleaning. It’s an essential procedure in maintaining the health and functionality of the afflicted teeth.

  • 5. Gummy Smile Treatment

A gummy smile can impact confidence and self-worth. This problem is characterized by excessive display of gum tissue giving the appearance of more gum than teeth in a smile. Gummy smile correction aims to create a balanced and aesthetically beautiful smile that accentuates the patient’s natural facial characteristics, this may involve several treatment options depending on the underlying cause and severity of the gummy smile. The options include:

  • li-iconSurgical gum contouring and reshaping, also known as gingivectomy/ esthetic crown lengthening.
  • li-iconReposition the teeth and jaw with orthodontic treatment when the cause is increased growth of the upper jaw or malocclusion.
  • li-iconLip repositioning surgery or botox are recommended when hypermobile upper lip is the underlying reason for gummy smile.
  • li-iconIn severe cases, jaw (orthognathic) surgery may be needed for correction.

At Plano Top Dental, depends on your specific dental and aesthetic concerns, as well as the underlying cause of your gummy smile. Your periodontist will help you to determine the appropriate treatment option for the most pleasing outcome.
